  • 6 week embroidery workshop starting Friday 25th September 7pm – 9pm 2020

    £125.00

Discover the wonderful art of Embroidery on this six week course. Each week will feature a different technique to master this popular craft and everything we do is worked BY HAND, no machine are used at all. Which means this course is suitable for absolute beginners to embroidery and all projects can be completed at home with very little equipment.

    Friday 25th September

On this first session you will receive two embroidery hoops, a selection of needles and threads and a lovely pair of embroidery scissors. These will be yours to keep so don’t forget to bring them on each session.

To start off our six weeks of embroidery, we will be learning how to transfer a pattern to fabric, how to mount our fabric in a hoop and how to do 4 basic embroidery stitches. We will have completed a mini sampler by the end of the session.

    Friday 2nd October

In this session we will have a quick recap of week one, then using our embroidery hoop we will be exploring colour and texture by using hand applique combined with our basic stitches to create a small botanical scene.

    Friday 9th October

In this session we will move away from using our embroidery hoop and will learn how to transfer a pattern to felt. We will be making small fox brooch which will be embellished with two new embroidery stitches and beaded embroidery work.

    Friday 16th October

In this session we will be picking up our hoops again to learn the Japanese stitching style of ‘Sashiko’ and then comparing it to the western version ‘Chicken Scratch’. Both styles are relaxing and meditative ways to embroider.

    Friday 23rd October

In this session we will be introducing you to the traditional patchwork technique of English paper piecing or EPP. English Paper Piecing is shaping fabric around a paper template and hand stitching the shapes together to create a fabric piece that can turned into many projects. We will be doing the addictive little ‘hexie’ shape. It is just perfect for using up fabric scraps and each hexie can be hand embellished further if wanted.

    Friday 30th October

On our last session we will be learning the art of cross stitch, we will read a counted pattern and then stitch our way through a simple design. Cross stitch differs from standard embroidery in that it is worked on a ‘even weave’ which means the fabric is woven to make sure that there are the same number of threads per inch in both the warp and the weft (i.e. vertically and horizontally). This leaves perfect little squares in your fabric, into which we stitch little ‘crosses’. It is a slightly more controlled way of stitching.

After completing this detailed 6 week course you will be well on your way to becoming very confident in hand embroidery.

On this two hour workshop, you will be encouraged to create your own unique project using basic embroidery stitches.

This course is suitable for those who have never threaded a needle before. We do not use a machine for any part of this mini quilt so it can be finished at home with very little equipment.

We will be introducing you to the traditional patchwork technique of English paper piecing or EPP. English Paper Piecing is shaping fabric around a paper template and hand stitching the shapes together to create a quilt or wall-hanging. It is very relaxing and an easy method of patchwork and a lovely introduction to the world of quilting.

During the 3 hour workshops we will teach you the techniques & skills to create hexagons, how to cut and use paper pieces to make accurate shapes and how to glue or hand baste them together.

We will then make 7 hexagons to hand sew together to make a lovely flower shape. We will show you how to edge and bind your work to make a mini wall hanging or cushion front.

This could be the start of a very addictive craft for you that can lead to an heirloom family quilt. It is an economical and fun way to use up fabric scraps and is super portable.

Fri 20th November 2020 6.30pm – 9.30pm – Workshop will be making a Christmas decoration rather than a mini quilt.

All material included. Fabric, thread and paper templates, plus all the additional fabric and batting to complete your work at home.

    2020 dates now available.

Free-machine embroidery has been described by Kirsty Allsopp as ‘the crack cocaine of the crafting world!’ and we have to agree – it is VERY addictive!

Sarah’s workshop will introduce you to this fascinating art form – it can be described as drawing with your sewing machine. This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners (no previous sewing experience required) but is also great as an introduction to a different sewing technique for more accomplished machinists or as a refresher for those that have tried free-machine embroidery before.

You will learn how to set up a sewing machine ready for free-machine embroidery and can have fun practising doodling and ‘writing’ onto fabric. Once you have mastered the basics, you will design and create your own framed textile picture using free-machine embroidery & appliqué techniques.

There will be a selection of fabrics available for you to use in your appliqué design, but you are very welcome to bring your own fabric if you prefer.

At the end of the workshop you will be able to set up a sewing machine for free-machine embroidery and have the knowledge to create your own textile art at home.

Information regarding suitable fabrics and threads etc and where to buy them will also be given to you.

You don’t need to bring anything with you as all tools and materials/equipment will be provided. However, please do feel free to bring your own fabric scraps & photos or pictures to provide inspiration for your framed picture.
